Yes compilers are hard, and the Itanium puts all the work on the compiler

I love your statement:

"Third, compiler advances have not even been fully tapped to exploit perforamnce improvement."

Almost every defense of VLIW and earlier parallel architectures stated the same thing, "If the damm compiler guy's would just do their job...". Well wouldn't you think after 40 years of trying some compiler guy would do it if it could be done for general purpose programs with current languages?

We do need fundamental research into better algorithms and approaches to parallism. But as somebody who has delivered a heck of a lot of compilers over the last 30 years, the compilers are not likely to answer the question for general purpose programs.

One of my old professors Dave Kuck pointed out that "If a program is 50% parallel (and this is a lot) then with perfict paralization you can double its speed". For those who don't remember Dave Kuck did the software for Illiac IV and a lot of the parallization that is in use today.
