Your own image search w/o tags at home
Although searching an image with tags is not a simple problem, it is actually not at all a new topic and CMU labs are not inventing anything. In 1998 I did a java applet that computes correlations and perform statistics over frequency bands of images in order to perform image retrieval without any tags. The applet is at http://lcavwww.epfl.ch/~balmelli/java/textures/demo.htm
press "catalog" to see the set of images, you can browse is using the arrows (about 300 images). Then click on one image and press "search". The applet will find what he thinks are perceptually similar images...
have fun happy
