I would venture to think, like in ZoneAlarm, you could allow certain things to pass. However, that then points to a possible way to breach the protection unwillingly.

When you read about the cost of DOS attacks, this certainly seems to approach a way of keeping the costs of those down.

Still, as linuxoverwindows stated ... there would be so many (like in patching) that will just not upgrade. THOSE are the ones that are probably unwittingly part of the botnets now!
