On sharing IBM technology...
Apple may have been in on a lot of Power PC's development, but the primary basis for Power PC was still an outgrowth of IBM's POWER designs. I'm not at all sure IBM's patent litigation attorneys will sit quietly at Intel incorporating ANY technology that could be construed (from a protectionist's standpoint) as evolving from IBM's earlier RISC efforts, regardless of what Apple themselves may deem reasonable to bless.

As for WHY Intel saw the need to hook up with Apple...that's simple, IMO...Apple's been on a role of late, even if it's primarily iPod's doing, and Intel's been somewhat spotty in the meantime. Adding a flourishing Apple to their client base is something AMD finally CAN'T do a bloody thing about. Also, changing the focus on power consumption rather than the raw performance speed takes attention away from Intel's processing shortcomings (i.e., second best in a two-horse race) in recent performance head-to-heads with AMD.

Sounds to me that by trying to rewrite the rules of engagement, Intel has finally conceded the speed game. Only that Intel's marketing department is hoping that few will notice.
