Many reasons
Yes, Apple did have some problems with supply from IBM, and
that's one of the reasons for the switch. The biggest reason,
however, was the complete lack of progress IBM had made with
improving the PPC chip, and in particular, getting a G5 that would
run in a laptop. Intel has at least promised a much brighter future
of low power chips.
