How old are you, non-genius?
In case you weren't around in the 8-bit machine days, yes, you
can write code for the CPU. How do you think all these high level
languages get things done? Someone writes machine level code
that does all the heavy lifting. Since the late days of DOS and
then Windows it has been easier to write for the OS and get all
the hardware running it as opposed to writing for each CPU
config.

These days most CPUs have plenty of code available to keep
nasty things like this from happening, but if someone has the
machine code and the skill they could write a bug to do their
bidding on your CPU. I admit it seems far-fetched that anyone
would go to such extremes to hack a site, but if the OS has been
strengthened enough then the hardware hack option might be a
softer target.
