AMD has been competing with 5 yr old Netburst
Which they never really should have in the 1st place. Intel counted on clock speed vs efficiency and suckering in people that clock speed was better, when their 20 stage then later 31 stage pipeline was very inefficient. Now they are having to backtrack to Pentium M which is largely based on the P3 architecture which was much more efficient but didn't clock as high. AMD was smart, and never bit on the pipeline gimmick, and stuck with a 12 stage pipeline. Also, when AMD went with a 90 NM process, it resulted in a cooler running, lower wattage CPU, when Intel did that, the CPU actually ran hotter! and draws even more power. Not a very good design. AMD's biggest advantage right now, is a more efficient design, and a screamingly fast onboard memory controller. Next up on their list is onboard PCI-E.
