DITTO!!!!!!!!!!
YES, i totally agree with your observation. the fat cats are talking future profits and slicing the pie up among theirselves, but they are not concentrating on ensuring that the computing experience is a liberating experience for the user. instead, they are wholly focused on controling the user's access to data, making everything obsolete in short time, and charging for every aspect of computing. i'm sure there will be those trapped by the computer's functonality in performing business related tasks and will always have to have one, but individual users are being alienated by the ever increasing complications imposed by the industry. those of us that just want to use the thing to enjoy ourselves are not going to accept the meddling into our private lives and are not going to pay for every song and every video clip, or every click of the mouse. the computer industry wants us all to be subscribers to software and hardware and that business model is only going to work with the wealthy who are used to such models. i do beleive that the computer industry knows this and really doesn't care about the rest of the public; look at the cable industry. many have scrapped their cable connections because of endless price increases and bombardment of commercials that have made watching tv a bore, but the cattle that doesn't mind and never complains is their target audience. they just raise the price a little more when they loose subscribers. those that must have their tv's will pay it. the computer industry operates on the same premise. those that have to have computers will just bear the increased intrusion and endless charges. i will keep an old windows 98 machine and be happy with the speed and just use it to play a few games, go shopping, and email friends and family. i can copy movies with my vcr and make tapes with my cassette deck and to hell with computers as entertainment devices!
