I am an educator and Craig is right on target. He spoke almost the same words five years ago at Atlantic City at the National Educational Computing Conference. His message was largely ignored by NECC's parent organization ISTE. As an "Industry" we (education) treat technology as an elective instead of core curriculum. Most standard curriculum has English teachers teaching Word, Math teachers teaching spreadsheets (instead of Math) and nobody teaching computing and engineering.
ISTE our computing national organization focuses on computers in the content classroom and refuses to acknowledge that computing IS a content area. So our technology course study is relegated to "vocational" conferences and syllabi. The ACM has to schedule their own preconference at NECC to get any discussion at all on Computer Science in the K-12 curriculum.
