Why we don't need more engineers in the U.S.
Mr. Barrett seems a bit delusional. Technically trained people have very little future in America. If you want to be a success you need to be a lawyer or bean counter of sorts. Let's look at the facts:

I have a robotics engineering degree from the University of CA and even a "P.E." license in it. Whoopee, most of the companies I worked for as an engineer are out of business (not because of me, I hope...). So I got into computers. I even have a MSc in Comp Sci from a good Northeast University. My emphasis was on data warehousing. Oops.

Pay is falling, the hours are increasing and we are still treated worse than restroom attendants (sorry). My conclusion is that all the many years I spent at college are basically worthless and I would have been better off in my 20's starting a small business and growing it over time - or still go the college route but become a dentist or lawyer. Unfortunately, when I was younger my resources were limited, so I had to maximize the "bang" for my (not parents) buck which was engineering.

I would not recommend a technical career for anybody for any reason. Interesting yes, but not suitable for earning a living long term. I am in my "kid years" now and can't just hop from one coast to another to secure a job where the market is good. A burger frachise is looking better and better all the time...
