The company's net income grew to $63 million, or 17 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $8 million last year.

That's a good result, and $63 million is not a small amount of money. Might be a bit less than Microsoft pays to settle a nuisance lawsuit, but still good in the Apple frame of reference.

Problem is, there's next year. Did you notice the article said that iPods and iTunes are projected to be 50%+ of revenues next year compared with 9% this year? Steve Jobs has said Apple doesn't make money on the song store, mostly because the dumb record industry insists on huge licensing costs per track. iPods are popular now, but the analyst in the article projected their popularity will last for two years. For what it's worth, I think iPods will be big for about 1 year because price wins when cachet disappears.
So, next year is interesting.

That's Apple's problem: they have to run hard, have winners every year to keep going. Give 'em credit; they've found winners.
But when their luck/skill in new products runs out, they're quickly in life/death trouble.
Great company to watch, but I'll bet they wish life weren't quite so interesting all the time.
