Why did Sony betamax lose?
The reason, you remember, is because everyone else used the other format. Sony had a top quality vcr with a technically better format, but lost because they were about the most expensive and less widely available.
Sound familiar?
Also, Microsoft is pushing wma hard because they figure the dim record company execs will be concerned about having tightly controlled DRM. That counts, too.
I think cheap wins in so-called mp3 players. 2 hours is about enough music to retain, given normal use. Having thousands of songs you never hear is a nice-to-have which is not worth much extra money.
