Note how Bill has rushed out his Windows multi-media device (there's a link to the video on the ZDNet front page). Bill must the worst dresser I've seen - but anyway, we aren't talking about Bill's dress sense, are we?

It looks like a Newton with colour and a HDD, or maybe a Palm on steroids. Anyhow, MS has been caught napping again by iTunes and iPod - Apple has delivered a great success against Microsoft's background of failure in consumer devices and services (WebTV, etc.). And yes, Apple have had a few too (eWorld, emate, Newton (sigh)) but they have momentum with consumers right now.

Microsoft are scrambling to offer an alternative since Palladium is pretty dead, "trustworthy computing" is a joke (hey, three more Windows vulnerabilities this week) and the future is consumers and the digital hub (that's Apple's digital hub, not Microsoft's digital home). The best Microsoft have to offer is Longhorn in maybe 2006 - not much for consumers to get excited about in WinFS is there?

And Apple have only just started turning their attention back to corporate customers, with price and performance to match Windows with Linux/UNIX appeal openness too with Xserve and Xgrid.

At last MS will have another genuine competitor, not a sycophantic OEM supporter.
