IPods
Over Christmas break, I went to look at various hard drive
based mp3 players. Guess what, the ipod blew them
away. It is little wonder that they own the hard drive mp3
market? Yes, I saw cheaper mp3 players with as much
capacity, but they were far larger, had poorer ergonomics,
and lacked quality software to manage the thousands of
songs I have.

The ipod won eventhough it was slightly more expensive.
(About $50.00) The people who complain about the price
of ipods, do not truly understand the notion of value. For
example, I honestly don't believe the $249.00 dollar price
for the mini ipod presents great value. At $199.00 the
value would be good, at $149.00, it would be great, and at
$99.00, it would be stupendous. Yet, while lowering price
can raise value, it is but one aspect. For example, size,
ergonomics, software also add value. To people who don't
care that there computer is a beige box, this will be
entirely lost on them.

I good example is BMW vs. Toyota. The BMW commands a
price premium over Toyota, yet no one says BMW with
about 3% of world wide market share, should just shut the
doors. The ipod appeals to people who want a high
quality product, standard setting ergonomics, and
something cool.
