Specialized does not mean unadaptable
The original 8008 was intended to be used in a tank transmission for hydraulic control. I still ahve an authoritative book from the 1970's which assured me that the dream of building a general purpose business computer from microprocessors was completely unfeasible. I would be surprised if someone could not figure out a way to use a chipo designed for a cell phone, which would have to include digital signal processing, for example, to not be able to adapt it to something like WiFi, netowrking, or a really hot video graphics redering engine. The type of mathematical modeling you need for one is very similar to the other. I'm also sure there are a host of problems which could be approached using even a small subset of the overall instruction set as a RISC processor which would fly at 200 GHz.
