IBM, Sun seek to protect their own architectures
"..IBM, Sun Microsystems and others are promoting the Opteron chip from amd.."

The last thing Sun and IBM want is for Itanium to commoditize the high end enterprise where the big bucks are. They know that the 20 year old X86 architecture that Opteron is based on provides no competition in the long run to Sparc and Power. Opteron is the perfect block to keep Itanium from gaining traction. If that strategy succeeds, the very high end will remain proprietary and profitable.
