Intel can't cede this to AMD
AMD ate into Intel's server lead last quarter (ZDNet reported over 50% growth for AMD and that they were above 10% for the first time EVER -- link: http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9584-5803568.html). Intel's response: "We'll have something to compete in a year."

The previous poster was right that this is too little, too late. Intel can't cede this type of growth to AMD without taking a huge hit. Servers are where these companies make their big money.

At the current rate of growth, AMD would have almost 40% of the x86 server market by March 2006. It won't happen because such growth is almost never linear; but even if they get half that, Intel revenue will suffer significantly. They could drop their prices, but of course, that doesn't help the bottom line.

Expect AMD Opteron growth and server revenue growth to continue through Q2 2006. And if Intel botches this transition... well, the shareholders might grab their pitchforks and torches and head for Santa Clara.
