Tons of people run Imail
A guy I know who used to own a wireless ISP, ran his customers email on Imail. I think he had 30k users on a Xeon 933 box. We give only webmail access due to support issue pop/imap access would bring up, and he webmail part of Imail seems to take up a lot more resources than pop/imap, so our requirements are a bit higher.

But yeah, the server we got is major overkill. The reason we got such a machine was partly political.

Four years ago, we were given a budget of $0.00 to impliment student email, and we had two weeks to do it. We dug into our own budget and bought a used server for cheap, installed Imail, wrote up a beautifull kludge of a system from importing accounts automatically from the HP/UX system and things went well for about two years. Then the server blew up. The raid array completly melted down and we had to rebuild the whole thing from a backup on another server - which was jsut as old. over the next two years, we had to rebuild *it* twice due to exploding hard drives. All this time, the execs kept hammering us on why student email was so unreliable. When they finally got it through their head that hosting email for thoudands of people actually costs money, and that we can't magically pull uber uptime out of our asses on queue, they came up with some funds for a new server. We wanted something that would be reliable and last a long time, in order to keep the PHB's quiet.

Did I also mention it's runs a mirrored RAID array with *two* hot-spares ready to go. wink
