Tons of small jobs sounds about right
The bigger server is an online class server running on Win2k3/IIS6/MSSQL with a perl/tomcat backend powering the site. This would fit into the category of 'tons of small jobs'. Basically, it's thousands of hits per minute - requiring many tiny hits to the SQL backend. After we decided to get the server, I came to find out that many other users of the same course system are buying Opteron boxes too, because they perform particularly well with the software.

The smaller server is also Win2k3 running Imail and is not SQL intensive at all. It just does the webmail/mail sotrage and internal SMTP stuff for about 7000 users. The machine is massive overkill at this point, but the number of users may grow to up to 25000 over the next five years, so we needed a server that would provide some room to grow. I have a little OpenBSD box that runs SA and Amavis sheilding it from the outside world.
