One thing to warch out for is that multiple-Opteron system performance depends heavily on job loading. They utterly shine at mixes that have lots of small jobs running independently; they're at their worst when you have one honking task that runs with a memory footprint that pretty much chews up all of the physical memory.

Opteron systems are NUMA, so performance tracks what you get from NUMA systems (and obviously depends on how good your NUMA support is.)

I would expect Solaris to be quite good, Linux at least fair. Microsoft I frankly haven't a clue, but IIRC they never really planned to run MSWindows on NUMA hardware so it may be an afterthought or worse.

Bottom line, as usual, is to benchmark with your actual load mix.
