failure may be innocent - corruption is not
I have read through a large sample of the posts on this story about the latest HP layoffs. What's missing here is intelligent commentary on the fact that HP's founders never resorted to such tactics in over 50 years of running their company successfully. You cannot convince me for a second that the original HP did not routinely face economic downturns and other business challenges at least as severe as anything the Carly/Hurd types now have to deal with.

The fat payouts these high-level management types reserve for themselves is just a symptom of something far more rotten going on at the core of American business across the board. If HP can be hollowed out and ruined in short order by those whose agendas are never made public, nobody's job or career is safe anymore. (Perhaps none of us ever were really safe, nor should we expect to be. But now even the illusion is gone.)

Those who continue to talk about the moral consequences of greed or the right of management to make unpopular business decisions are dabbling in old-fashioned politics that, unfortunately, no longer matters in the grand scheme of things. The real power has migrated elsewhere.

As has been said by others, "If voting could really change anything it would be illegal." The courts, the legislature, and the executive branch of government no longer concern themselves with the needs and priorities of working people (the vast majority). Instead new laws are continuously crafted to enchace and expand the rights of various loud, obnoxious, powerful, and self-serving special interests.

Why?
