RE "Academically speaking, HP be yourself"
I actually agree with you on everything you stated. I know Dell isn't the world's best company, but Dell employees people in the this country and others. But i haven't really seen anything as far as layoffs are concerning in Dell's US Based business.

Who knows? I think the rich people should be poor so they can get a better feeling for what the rest of the people and the rest of the world is going through. If i had millions, or even billions of dollars i would most certainly be helping other people, because we need to be able to help other people so they in turn can help other people.

""What?s the problem with HP? It is the same as with other companies. The following is excerpted from Stephen Covey?s The 8th Habit:
? Only 37% have a clear understanding of what the company is trying to achieve and why. (the other 63% are lying).
? Only 15% are supported by their organization to execute on key goals.
? Only 15% operate in a high trust environment (though I suspect the number is lower in reality).
?and so on.

What do successfully run companies do? Not just high-technology but any company that captures a market and thrives on change? Let?s look at Southwest Airlines, Starbucks, and Nordstrom?s.
Southwest Airlines Colleen Barrett is on record saying success begins with leadership commitment to all employees. Why? Here?s textbook definition of human capital. It is the economic value of people with job-relevant abilities, knowledge, experience, ideas, energies, creativity and dedication. When managers give priority to human capital, they are recognizing that even in this age of high technology, people are (an) indispensable resource (Organizational Behavior, Schermerhorn, Hunt, Osborn). This capital must be empowered. When the other major airlines were downsizing after 9/11, what did Southwest do? It was not a massive WFR.
Starbucks is a company that sells a commodity. Or does it? I argue that Starbucks sells an experience. I have definitely had a better cup of joe at Peet?s and other establishments. Starbucks sells a variety of coffee products that are of decent quality and wraps them with a unique user experience of Wi-Fi access and music downloads. Compared to Dell, where is HP providing such a positive experience in purchasing commodity hardware?
Nordstrom?s has my wife?s business forever. On a recent trip, my toddler lost a shoe. My wife went to the shoe department to see about buying a new pair. After explaining what had happened, the shoe manager simply exchanged the one shoe we had with a new pair because ?It is the right thing to do?. That employee was empowered.
HP, we need you to step up.""
