Now that's more what was expected.
HP is having trouble selling. Of course they're laying off the sales force.

HP needs innovative products to sell if they don't want to be just another commodity producer. Of course they're laying off the R&D staff.

They already had a rule that any R&D project had to turn into a saleable product almost immediately. The layoffs are crippling product development for short term profits.

Good old rule of reduction. You remember:

If a company has a problem, the response is to get rid of the people who can solve it.
