The problem is "Public Trading"
I don't necessarily disagree with you, because many CEO's DO see employees as a line item on the balance sheet. That is wrong. The real root of the problem though is that companies such as HP are publically traded. I can list company after company whose demise began the day they became beholdin to the stock owners. The contrast is also true though.

The character of the CEOs is important also. Look at what has benn running HP. Carly had no vision for HP. It is well documented that she continued or exhasorbted the problems HP already had. No vision, no direction. So what she bought Compaq? Look at the numbers she let go both Compaq and HP employess.

There was a time when CEOs fought to keep their employees. That sadly is a thing of the past. I find it interesting that HP's stock rose on the news of the layoffs. That really plays to my point. If the CEO gets a vote of no confidence from the stockholders he/she is gone. If he/she can find a way to make the stock go up well they are a hero. The short cut is to cut employees cause, well cause you employees are just a line item, an expensive line item on the old balnace sheet.
