Re: Perspective
"When there is a difference in size, and one company has a monopoly position on the market, the rules change. The company that has the monopoly is expected to compete "fairly" in the market and more stringent guidelines are supposed to govern its behavior. **A monopoly isn't illegal in and of itself. It's what a company does with that monopoly that makes it's behavior, legal or illegal."

While I have no desire to either nit-pick or to argue against your analysis--which would be quite useful to most of us, if nost of us were capable of learning!--it's a fact that having the majority market share for a certain type of product is not the same as having a monopoly on that type of product.

Examples:

(1) Intel has somewhere around 85% of the computer CPU market. This is the majority market share in this market, but it is not a monopoly.

(2) Microsoft has approximately 95% of the home and SOHO operating system market. This is the majority market share in this market, but it is not a monopoly.

MONOPOLY, from Gr. monos (one) polein (to sell), occurs when there is only one provider for a specific type of product. If Intel had a 100% market share in CPUs, it would be a monopoly. If Microsoft had a 100% market share in home/SOHO operating systems, it would be a monopoly. Note that it takes 100% to be a monopoly; 99.9% is a dominant, not a monopoly.
