Wall Street likes layoffs.
That drives up the stock and increases profits.

Executives get bonuses based on either stock price or profits.

Lay people off, and executives get a load of money.

He's right.

By the way, in many cases the people laid off are essential and produced enough that the replacements can't keep up. The company goes down the tubes awhile after executives have left with bonuses and severance.

I'd still say that companies will not be well run until executives receive flat compensation, no incentives. They may not do anything, but they want be rewarded for harming the organization.

And, by the way, please don't assume anything about someone who is unemployed. He may need luck rather than "reinventing". I'm glad you were able to recover, and he may be doing no less than you did.
