It's trickle-down economics
As you said, it's not as easy for mom and pop Walmart buyer who has trouble with the VCR to use Linux than Windows, at this point in time. So they market it to the people who will use it. New developments will make the next version easier to use, and it will be marketed to the next tier down, with the help of the last focus group praising it's improvements. Linux will get there, but you have to nuture and grow it properly. If you market straight to the people who won't get it and have too hard a time with it in this stage, you will only hear them complain in the next easier stage. It will happen, just not overnight.
