RFID guided robots
Couldn't help responding to this thread. Our company, Wehali Engineering, uses RFID tags embedded in in the floor for robotic navigation. The software is Strabo Pathfinder, which has been around for a few years. That and RFID tags placed in strategic locations help the robot orient itslef every time it enters and leaves a room and whenever it gets lost. (When it gets lost, it goes inot a search behavior that basically goes to the center of the room and drives an outward spiral until it sees an RFID tag. The tags are RFID nails and adhesive backed tags for carpets and are placed more or less, in the center of the room

This virtually eliminates those creeping dead reconing errors that plague som amny robots. When the robot passes a tag, it know exactly where it is, within a couple of inches. When it wakes up, it goes about it's business until it decides it's lost, then...

The total cost of doing it this way is about a dollar per tag plus 40 dollars for the reader, making it a very practical solution. The robot still needs compasses, encoders and that sort of thing but the localization problem is pretty much solved.

As far as I know, we are the only company doing this right now.
