Given the industries methodology, I agree.
First, I agree, the industry is NOT waning. In fact sales have been pretty much flat. But in an environment where growth is everything its easy to see why some view it as they do.

To be honest my feeling is that it is the software folks that have really dropped the ball. It seems as though they are hung up on "business" use and they don't bother to look around and realise that there is a world outside of the corporate office. Look at what we see coming out of MS and the Open Source camp, everything is targeted at business/office use.

Even applications people use at home are off shoots of business applications. Heck, I'd bet 90% of all home computers have an Office Suite of some sort. The same for photo and video editing, they were sold to corporations and migrated to home use, at least on the low end cost apps. How many home users are going to spend $1000 to make a decent home movie on DVD? Not many!

As I look around my home I see so many areas that "computers" could make life easier or add capabilities in, and yet they are mostly ignored by the industry.

I believe that if one of the players in the industry stepped back, really took a look at opportunies in the home, and then built products around them they would/could own the home market. The hardware is there, its all off the shelf components, and all it requires is some imagination and programming skill...
