Finally a sane voice in the crowd. Spot on post NT Admin
You are spot on with your observation. Most consumers are hanging on to those older machines because they work for their needs. With the exception of automobiles the general consumer expects their purchase to have a longer lifespan than the upgrade cycles dictated by OS manufacturers and the bells and whistles that are being offered today are woefully lacking in producing consumer excitement.

Therefore the Gateways, Dells etc must find another income source and that source is other consumer electronics outside of PCs and peripherals. In the long run this will be good for the consumer. More competition = more choices = lower prices. Now the question will be, is it going to be enough to keep PC manufacturers such as Gateway afloat? That will all depend on consumer orientation, education (through advertising) and a bit of luck.

Having moved away from PCs I will not purchase another Gateway machine but I do have their credit card. My point here is I represent a segment of branded consumers that might (I won't, I pay cash for my home purchases) see that new TV at Gateway and look at that credit card and go purchase the flat screen. Time will tell and I love the smell of competition in the morning.
