IBM is just getting ready for Longhorn
I would bet that there are many more memos just like this
one circulating through Fortune 500 companies.

Software Assurance 6 was both a slap in the face, and a
wake-up call, for corporations that have let themselves
become hostages to the Microsoft monopoly interests.

The Fortune 500 companies have computer scientists,
PhD's in this field, looking at the implications of "Longhorn"
and they don't want to be gored by this load of bull being
put forth by Microsoft.

Longhorn puts them on the horns of a dilemma, as going
forward with Microsoft's "vision" of the future means a total
capitulation to control by Redmond. Once the Trojan Horse
that is Longhorn is allowed in the gates they will be locked
in to whatever future extortion plans (SA7?) Microsoft has
cooked up to bleed them dry.

Note that the timeframe put forth by the IBM memo
coincides nicely with the timeline for Longhorn. IBM want's
to have this ready to implement for themselves and for
their customers by the time Longhorn ships. (if it ever
does).

By 2006 this move to Open Source and Open Standards
will be ready as an alternative to ceding control of your IT
department and all the corporate desktops to Microsoft.

Software Assurance 6 was a colossal blunder by Microsoft
that tipped their hand as to where they want you to go once
you are locked in to Microsoft products. A close look at
Longhorn reveals that it's primary purpose is to lock in it's
adopters to forever being at the mercy of Microsoft's
agenda and pricing whims.
