MS is desperate here, they will use part of the billions.
As people start building a browser, email client, word processing into a game box or VCR, people will be less dependent on Windows apis and formats over time. Microsoft will spend billions making sure you use their proprietary formats and apis, and thus stay locked in. But, it will be a hard sell to device manufacturers, with Sony at the top of the list. They will not want MS steering them around, controling inovation, and sucking all of the profits out like they have done with the PC industry. Well, it will be a bloody fight. MS in one corner fighting for its life, billions of dollars in the bank. Every consumer manufacturer in the other corner, fighting to keep one company from making all the money, already surviving on paper thin margins. There will be defections, MS will use those billions to buy manufacturers if they have to. Heck, they will get into manufacturing, like they did with XBox if they have to.

This will be fun to watch.
