RFID tags are cool technology
Imagine what shopping would be like in a world where every product is tagged. You walk up to the checkout stand, and detectors immediately scan everything in your cart. The total is displayed immediately, and you swipe your credit card to pay for it. You are on your way in under a minute. This would spell the end of the checkout clerk, but it saves a LOT of time for consumers.

Next, imagine a refridgerator that detects what you have in the fridge. This is where having an internet connection into your refridgerator could be useful. You could be a the store, pull out your handheld and ask your fridge what it has. You can base your buying on that.

As for privacy concerns, well, stores ALREADY know what you bought, since they track each product with a barcode and know what you are walking out with. Someone on the outside could theoretically stand around with a scanning device as you walk out to your car and know what you are buying, but, seriously, how common would that be (and besides, they won't know who YOU are unless they ask you).

Everyone gets all worked up whenever a new technology appears on the scene. RFID is cool, though, and well worth the pain.
