If volume doesn't mean squat why does everyone always talk about it. Even you sight it, IBM making chips for so many different markets. It's all about volume, when a chip fabrication plant cost billions of dollars. The more you make the cheaper the cost per unit.

4 million PPC for Apple $50 profit = $200,000,000
100 Million Cells for Sony $5 profit = $500,000,000

Numbers made up, but which business would you want to be in? Not really that complicated, besides IBM plans to sell this Cell processor to more than just Sony, maybe 200 Million units. XBOX probably another 75 million units, Nintendo 60 or 70 million.
