Watch for *SIMULTANEOUS* booting of MacOS and Windows!
This transition is going to be painful in the
short term, both for Apple's users and for
Apple's revenue stream (as sales are likely
to plunge until the transition is well under
way and a proven success). Given the pain it's
likely to cause, I spent some time wondering
why Apple would do this, and the only conclusion
I could reach was that they are clearing the
path to two goals:

1. They will eventually run Mac OS X (and all
the Mac applications) on generic PCs. This will
be easy to check; if Mac OS X needs the OpenBoot
firmware, then I'm wrong (or there's more work
to be done). But if Mac OS X/Intel doesn't need
OpenBoot, then count on this.

2. *MORE IMPORTANTLY*, I think these machines
will eventually include a hypervisor that allows
multiple virtual machines to be booted into
different operating systems. That is, you'll be
able to *SIMULTANEOUSLY* boot one partition of
your machine into Mac OS X while booting another
partition into XP while a third boots into
Linux. Need an app that only runs on Windows?
No problem! Just switch to that virtual machine,
run your app, and then switch back to Mac OS X
for the rest of your work. This will greatly
ease the problem of switching PC people into
the Mac world.

(And meanwhile, Virtual PC should run at near-
native speeds since there's no longer the problem
of emulating an X86 processor.)
