mySQL great tool for the job
I'm sure it won't be long before people start posting to this article all kinds of statments about the things mySQL doesn't do. You know, things that Oracle and SQL Server do out of the box. What they fail to realize is that's not what mySQL is trying to do. A significant number of companies use Oracle, SQL Server and other commercial RDBMS's on projects which don't require 99% of the advanced functionality those products offer. Save a record...retrieve a record...provide rudimentary security, if security is even required at all. If any company spends the money on commercial licenses for projects like this, that person should be reeducated in the benefits of free software. Even Microsoft's MSDE is very often overlooked for projects which need a very simple, low-overhead minimal database that adds no project costs. I've used both MSDE and mySQL for numerous projects and saved companies thousands of dollars in licensing fees. Why spend all that extra money when free gives you everything you need?
