Not exactly "talking" barcodes
Yes, RFID technology is the natural successor to barcodes for inventory control. I should know, I have been working with andd designing barcode driven systems for two decades.

The privacy issue comes when you start to "barcode" people with technology that can be remotely detected and tracked.

For example, someone buys a piece of apparel with a RFID. During the sales transaction, the consumer's name, address, phone number, and credit card number are captured.

If that data is somehow acquired...through either legal or illicit means...and the RFID is not removed, when a scanner encounters that "talking" barcode, that person's privacy has been compromised.

I am by no means condeming this technology, but the potential for it to be abused is there.
