- You guys should learn about AMD
-
Opeteron has been a good platform for 1-4 way servers. Faster than the Xeons and more reliable.
AMD has been producing great designs, uh, well, forever. They even fabbed some stuff for Intel back in the day.
Let's see here:
AMD 486's were faster than Intel 486's
AMD K5's were generally faster than Pentuims (except at floating point)
K6 and K62 were faster than P2's (except floating point)
Athlon wiped the floor with P3
Athlon XP wipes the floor with P4
AMD64 wipes the floor with P4
Opteron cleans up with Xeon
See a pattern? AMD has been producing the better product for a while now.
"hey have the odd good product but in between, they run hot, prone to errata (it is in their own white papers)"
Have you seen the errata papers on the P3 and P4 and Xeon? They are huge as well. And it's been generally known that with the last iteration of the Athlon, AMD64, and Opteron, they use less power and generate less heat than the P4 or Xeon.
When I queried the IBM rep 2 years ago about Opteron blades he stated they had them in house and loved them as they were perfect for the blade environment - low power and low heat.
"than an Intel. I have had brand new AMD's choke and sputter when they are under serious load. On the other hand, I have found that Intel chips (older PC cpu's) are the best for building junkers because they just don't want to die and they are just as stable as the day they came from the store."
Then you've had a bad motherboard. I've had my AMD boxes (all the way from K5-Athlon) pegged at 100% CPU and they are as snappy as an Intel CPU. And I've had them running for years 24/7 without issues in server type applications. That includes and aincient K5/133 that just would not die. The only AMD chip I had fail was my K62, which after 4 years, the power supply failed and took the CPU and motherboard with it.
I've never been let down by AMD in my personal and my client's computers. Something I can't say about Intel (my only dud cpu was an Intel). - Posted by: ITGuy04 Posted on: 06/02/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
