This is the *big* test for AMD
From the story: "These dual-core chips also sell at a
premium price. The 4800+ will sell for $1,001 in quantities
of 1,000 while the 4600+ will go for $803... The competing
Pentium D chips from Intel, released last week, sell for
between $241 and $530 in 1,000-unit quantities.

"'Intel says they are going to flex their marketing muscle to
bring stuff to the market cheaply,' [AMD product marketing
manager Jonathan] Seckler said. 'We are going to appeal to
people who appreciate the performance benefits.'"

So this is the moment AMD has been waiting for. That their
chips out-perform Intel's is well known in technology
circles, and AMD will finally try to enforce a price premium
for that performance. I suppose that if they can't sell them
at the higher price, they can quietly lower the price to move
the inventory. So it isn't an all-or-nothing gamble.

My hats off to them for making it this far. I'm sure they've
dreamed of this day since releasing the first Athlon, and
they're finally here.

And I hope the strategy works, because an more financially
stable AMD can compete better with Intel. I just hope it
doesn't work too well, because dependency on large
margins can make one too fat and happy (just ask Intel).
