OSX was NeXTSTEP which easily ran on intel
OSX was built on NeXTSTEP an OS platform that was ported to x86, HP PA-Risc, and Sparc variants. This was done in 1993. In 1996 Apple chose NeXT as its next OS platform. Some of the builds of Rhapsody where clearly designed to run on x86. It is in its roots and in its strategy. It is well known that Apple runs a program codenamed Marklar to do concurrent development on x86 for the that primary business reason to keep Apple from being locked in to one processor manufacturer. One thing for sure is that Steve Jobs will not make the same mistakes he made at Apple in the 80?s and at NeXT in the 90?s.
