Apple & Linux

An aside about Linux. I'm not sure that Apple and Linux
developers share much common interest. Last I heard, the Linux
folks were ready to lynch Apple for proprietizing open?source
code (as in the current Safari 2.0 rendering engine fracas). Much
of Apples M.O. does not fit with open?source ideology. Bottom
line: if the Linux community were to put its mind to it, it could
develop a GUI (free) in the same way Firefox was developed. And
if that GUI (or maybe more than one) were to be as powerful and
usable as OS X, and if a suite of media development apps?all
free?designed to compete head-on with Apple's were to then
be developed (see Lawrence Lessig's article in the latest
Technology Review), Apple would have nowhere to go. This is
not far-fetched?it is already starting to happen.
