This is really an old idea
Started with research by the Dept. of Energy back the late 70's and 80's with oil producing algae. One study at UNH concluded we could grow our entire oil transportation needs by taking over 15,000 square miles (about 10%) of the Sonora desert.

I know that's a sensitive ecological area, but if we could tell the Saudis to take their oil and cram it in their dirty place, then the desert rattlesnakes and gila monsters can just move the f' over. Whether it's there or elsewhere the idea is we could grow fuel on a fraction of the land area we use for growing food. And just now a start up company is coming online? Why haven't we been doing this before now?

Oh, I guess the religious right hasn't gotten a vision about that yet. They're too all up about more important things like federal judges to bother with something as worldly as fuel politics.
