Plus seems to be winning
Everybody I know is getting DVD recorders that handle both formats: Plextor is the first choice, but some have the Sony since it was available longer. A few are waiting for the dual-layer recorders to arrive in the first half of 2004.

The plus format seems to be winning. It is the better technology, but had a late start, and the minus format had captured a good portion of the market. But now the plus format is faster than the minus format; it is already twice as fast. The media is the same price for either format, so my friends that have a choice are using the plus format media. Plus dual-layer drives may appear a full year before the minus dual-layer drives, which will push many people into using the plus format.

I thought the plus format would win because it has the better technology. Now I think it will win because it is progressing faster, and has better specifications noticable to even the computer illiterate public.

The minus format will survive only until most of the drives are replaced. Most of the minus-only drives sold were 4.7GB 2x. Upgrading to 8.5GB 8x may be enough incentive to cause the general public to switch to the plus format. The drives should be available for next Christmas, and the minus format will be declared terminal by early 2005.
