Home video is one thing...
...but when you're compressing DVDs from the beginning, the 9.6GB variety on sale today, there is a noticable decrease in quality going to 4.7GB. Your home video and photoslideshows were never compressed to fit on the disc, that's why they still look good.

When I play my 4.7GB copy and then pop in the original, even an untrained eye notices a little degradation.

Dual-layer for me!
