Market share versus use
If just a small percentage of cell phones get MP3-playing capability, Microsoft could easily say they're eating into the iPod's market share. Even if no one uses the MP3-player in their cell phone, it could look like the iPod is losing in the market.

So it will be important for news outlets to avoid repeating what MS says without keeping an eye on whether or not iPod sales actually slide.

However, if this article is any indication, we can't necessarily count on the press to do that.
