iPod replacement? Apple doesn't care

On the topic of an iPod replacement, I don't think Apple cares a whit about that. They are using the iPod and iTunes Music Store to drive demand for their computers, and it's working.

Last quarter, they increased their computer sales by 40% from the prior year, and their market share grew from 2% to 2.44% in a single year. If they can get their market share to 5% by the time the music player market is commoditized (and the iPod makes them no more money), that will be a huge coup and will ensure their long-term survival.

As for the iTunes Music Store, it's Windows compatible, so the bigger the online music market gets, the more they win on that one. Some people think Apple should allow the iPod play music downloaded from competitors's web sites, but I disagree. When the market starts turning away from the iPod, they should make sure that music downloaded from the ITMS can play on any player. That will guarantee the success of the online store, with little up-front cost and a ton of potential profit in the long-term.
