He's right, but...
From the story: "The BlackBerry is great but we're bringing a new approach," [Gates] said. "With BlackBerry you need to link to a separate server, and that costs extra. With us, the e-mail function will already be part of the server software."

The big problem is that sending/receiving email via a cell phone will cost you airtime minutes. So "peak hours" email is probably expensive via phone, just as it is via Blackberry. So MS will have to provide some other compelling reason to switch.

If Gates can get cell phone companies to give email minutes for free (or perhaps MS could pay the freight for those minutes until it's entrenched in the market), he might be onto something.
