4/10 Quick failure after warranty expired

This is regarding the LC-37D43U unit, not specifically reviewed by ZDnet. Bought a unit new from Sears June 2007, just over $1000, nice looking, worked well, nice picture, pretty typical of all flat screens. Did not buy extended warranty. Not used heavily, we don't watch a lot of TV, few programs during the week, Saturday cartoons. Eighteen months later, Jan 2009, daughter watching DVD movie, TV goes dark, totally inoperative. Took it to Sharp authorized repair facility, told me Main Board is fried, needs replacement, $282 part cost, $455 with labor and taxes. Called Sharp.usa Aquos Advantage service, said eighteen months to failure is short time for major component, would they possibly cover new part cost? NO, out-of-warranty means out-of-warranty, no help for any of the costs. Will consider more upscale brand for next purchase, hopefully will have more robust electronics, disappointed Sharp would not stand behind their quality. $1000 TV is now $1500 TV
