Format shifting is allowed under fair use laws. The problem here is
that with a DVD, you're going to need to decrypt it in order to copy
it. As I understand it, there are exceptions under the DMCA that
allow for personal and educational uses where you are allowed to
circumvent such protections. However, it is illegal for anyone to
supply you with software that circumvents those protections, so
how you're legally supposed to do so, I don't know.

It's quite a tangled ball of wax, to mix a few metaphors.
