Wow, lots of sides to this one.
The Telco's:

Surly they want to see the cable company be forced to share just as they must. In fact I think that if the Telco's are forced to live with the tellecommunications laws as they are and cable is not, the Telco's are doomed.

The Cable Guy:

Hey, it's my investment, I don't wanna share and I sure don't wanna share with my competition. They offer me nothing. Pffft

Independent ISPs:

Hey, if we can convince everyone that we just gotta have a free ride when it comes to investment to be competitive, how cool is that? We can play it off as being the hero to the "little guy".

And now, here comes the steam roller, WiMAX. Ok, so maybe it does have things to be worked out, but the tech is there and the big hitters are getting serious about it. There are lots of working WiMAX (not yet standards centric) installations including small cities or towns.

While these are point to point devices, the work already in place for a WiMAX "mesh" is truly facinating and it can't come to fast for my taste. It may be a few years away to a fully functioning mesh, but it is obvious that is what people really want.

Heck we have all read enough sci fi to see that such a mesh is the future of connectivity. WiMAX or a couple generations of it, is where it's all going to start an uncontrolable growth path.

"Presence" is going to take on an entirely new meaning and it will have very little to do with Telco's or the cable guy as we know them...
